the final help file
^
If you wish to plot the opening prices
you must press the `Y' key. If you press
the `N' key or the the <return> key the
chart will be drawn without the opening
prices. Plotting the opening prices
will give you more information, but the
chart will appear more crowded and
harder to read.
^
Simply press the <return> key or the `Y'
key if you would like volume and open
interest information plotted along with
your price information. The volume
information will be represented by the
solid vertical lines just below the
price plots. The open interest will be
represented by the dashes just below the
price plots. If you are using only one
quarter of the screen to plot your
chart, the volume and open interest
will be plotted in the same section of
the screen as your price information.
Therefore, if you are using only one
quarter of the screen you should not
plot the volume and open interest.
^
You may plot from one to three moving
averages at one time.
^
The length of a moving average can range
from 2 days to the number of days in
your data file. If the number of days
in your data file exceeds 299, the
maximum length of the moving average
will be 299 days.
^
Pressing the `Y' key will instruct the
program to plot the scale on the chart.
You will normally want the chart to be
scaled unless you are plotting over an
existing indicator. For example, if you
are about to plot moving averges over a
bar chart you will not want to have the
scale drawn on the chart since a scale
already exists for the bar chart.
^
The length of an exponentially smoothed
moving average may range from .001 to
.99.
^
With a High / Low Oscillator, the
following ranges will apply for long and
short parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 5
Long -5 0
^
The size of the price change which you
wish to use as a buy or sell signal is
completely dependent on the commodity
under study and the length of your
Momentum Indicator. You should try to
determine a price change which would be
slightly extreme for the commodity you
are trading given the time interval used
in the momentum index. The maximum
price change which can be charted with a
Momentum Indicator is 32683. In reality
you should never require parameters of
this size. The following ranges will
apply to buy/sell parameters of your
Momentum Indicator.
parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 5
Long -5 0
^
The length of this particular indicator
can range from 2 to 299 days. If you
have less than 299 days in your data
file, the maximum length will be the
number of days in your data file.
^
If you are plotting a moving average of
another indicator such as an oscillator,
the maximum length of the moving average
will be the number of days in your data
file (or 299 if you have more than 300
days in your file) minus the length of
the other indicator. For example, if
your data file contains 100 days and you
are going to plot the moving average of
a 25 day oscillator then the maximum
length of the moving average will be 75.
^
When naming a chart to be saved on disk
you must enter the disk drive and the
path name as the firt part of the file
name. For example, if you wish to save
your chart on the B drive in the sub
directory titled CHARTS, and you would
like to name your file GRAPH1, you will
enter the following name:
-->B:\CHARTS\GRAPH1
B: identifies the disk drive.
\CHARTS identifies the sub directory.
\GRAPH1 is the name of the file.
Note: You must have a sub directory
already created before you enter the
High Tech program. For more information
about sub directories consult your DOS
manual.
To simply save CHART1 on the B drive;
-->B:CHART1
If you type;
-->CHART1
The chart will be saved on the currently
active drive.
^
For the limit move, you must enter the
maximum number of points that the
commodity can move in one day. Be sure
to enter this value in points not
dollars. For example, if the value of a
limit move is $3 you will enter it as
300 points since no decimals are used in
the High Tech program.
If you are using CSI compatible data you
can look up the limit moves in Appendix
B.
Minimum limit move is one point.
Maximum limit move is 32683 points.
^
An Oscillator is an index which has
values ranging from 1 to -1. Therefore,
since a short signal is given by a
positive value and a long signal is
given by a negative value, the following
paramater ranges apply:
parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 1
Long 0 -1
^
You must decide for yourself the value
of a percentage change in price which
indicates a new bull or bear market. New
bull markets are indicated by price
increases and bear markets are indicated
by price decreases. Therefore you must
enter a positive value for a buy signal
and a negative value for a sell signal.
Buy and sell signals must be entered in
real numbers. For example, if you wish
to buy when the price increases by ten
and one half percent you will enter
10.5.
The following ranges apply for buy and
sell parameters.
parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 -999
Long 0 999
^
You must decide for yourself the value
of a percentage change in price which
indicates a new bull or bear market. New
bull markets are indicated by price
increases and bear markets are indicated
by price decreases. Therefore you must
enter a positive value for a buy signal
and a negative value for a sell signal.
Buy and sell signals must be entered in
real numbers. For example, if you wish
to buy when the price increases by three
and one half percent you will enter 3.5.
The following ranges apply for buy and
sell parameters.
parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 -50
Long 0 50
^
Percent R values will range from 0 to
100. Higher values indicate oversold
conditions in the market and lower
values indicate overbought condition in
the market. Buy and sell indicators
must fall between 0 and 100, and the
buying parameter must be higher then the
selling parameter.
The following ranges apply for %R buy
and sell parameters.
parameters:
-- Range --
Short 0 100
Long 0 100
Note: Long parameter must be greater
than short parameter.
^
The length of a Relative Strength Index
can range from 3 to 299 days. If you
have less than 299 days in your data
file, the maximum length will be the
number of days in your data file.
^
The values for RSI will range from 0 to
100. Higher values indicate an
overbought situation in the market and
lower values indicate an oversold
condition. Therefore your buy signal
must be less than your sell signal.
The following ranges will apply to buy
and sell parameters.
parameters:
----- Range -----
Long 0 100
Short 0 100
^
Enter the data drive and the sub
directory which contains the desired
data. For example, if you would like to
access data on drive B: in a sub
directory named COMDATA, you enter:
-->B:\COMDATA
If the data is not in a sub directory
then simply type
-->B:
^
To select the desired portion of the
screen for your chart, move the
highlighted selection up and down with
the arrow keys on the numeric key pad.
Once you have made your selection press
the <return> key to execute.
Example: to have your chart plotted in
the upper one quarter of the screen,
press the down arrow seven times and
then press the return key.
^
To select the desired technical
indicator simply move the highlighted
selector around the menu with the up,
down, left, and right arrow keys. Once
you have selected the desired technical
tool you must press the <return> key to
execute.
Example; To select Standard Moving
Averages, press the right arrow key
twice and hit the return key.
If you would like to exit the program at
this point, press the F1 key and exit
the program from the Program Menu.
^
To select the desired tool simply move
the highlighted selector up and down the
menu using the up and down arrow keys.
To execute a selected tool simply press
the <return> key.
^
To load data for a particular contract
you must move the highlighted selector
around the Data Files Menu with the up,
down, right, and left arrow keys. Once
the desired data file is highlighted you
must press the <return> key to have data
from that file loaded.
If the desired data file is on another
disk or in another directory, press the
F6 key and identify the drive.
If you would like to exit the program at
this point, press the F1 key and exit
the program from the Program Menu.
^
From this menu you can choose which
program you would like to run. Simply
move the highlighted selector up and
down the menu using the up and down
arrow keys and press the <return> key to
execute the selected program.
If you would like to run the Charting
program, you have a choice of running it
in three different modes. You can run
the program while creating an auto run
file which will save all your key
strokes. You can run the program with
an auto run file you have previously
created. Or, you can use manual control
while running the program. You will
normally run the program using manual
control.
The Data Management program will be used
for entry and upkeep of your data files.
The Configuration program will be used
to change the default data drive and
change the colors of your charts and
menus.
^
Value for the Accumulation Distribution
index will range from 0 to 100. Higher
values indicate distribution and lower
values indicate accumulation. You
should sell when the index is high and
buy when the index is low.
The following ranges apply to long and
short parameters;
parameters:
----- Range -----
Long 0 100
Short 0 100
Note: Long parameter must be less than
short parameter.
^
The length of a Price Channel can range
from 2 to the number of days in your
data file. If you have more than 300
days in your data file then the maximum
length of the index will be 299.
^
The value of a percent band can range
from .01 to 99. If you would like to
plot a two and one half percent price
band, enter 2.5 and not .0025.
^
The length of the Commodities Channel
Index can range from 2 to the number of
days in your data file. If you have
more than 300 days in your data file
then the maximum length will be 299
days.
^
The value of the constant can range from
.001 to 1.
^
The values for the Commodities Channel
Index will almost always fall between
200 and -200. Higher values indicate
that the commodity should be bought and
lower values indicate that the commodity
should be sold.
The following parameter ranges will
apply to short and long parameters:
parameters:
----- Range -----
Long 200 -200
Short 200 -200
^
The length of the Regression Slope Index
can range from 2 to the number of days
in your data file. If you have more
than 299 days in your data file, the
maximum length will be 299.
^
Long and Short parameters for the Volume
Open Interest Index can range from 999
to -999. Higher values indicate buying
conditions and lower values indicate
selling conditions.
The following ranges apply to short and
long parameters;
parameters:
---- Range ----
Long 0 999
Short 0 -999
^
The length of a Directional Movement
Indicator can range from 3 to one half
the number of days in your data file.
The maximum length will be 299 days.
If the program is not accepting the
length you are giving it, you are
probably specifying a length which is
greater than one half the days in your
data file.
^
The trading value of the ADX will fall
between 1 and 99. Higher Values of ADX
indicate greater directional strength.
^
The starting value of the Acceleration
Factor can range from .001 to .9.
^
You can increment the Acceleration
Factor by .001 to .9, depending on the
starting value of the acceleration
factor. The starting value plus the
increment value must be less than .9
which is the maximum ending value of the
Acceleration Factor. For example, if
you have entered a starting value of .5
you cannot increment by .6. The most
you can increment by is .5. If the
program is not accepting your increment
value, your starting value plus your
increment value is probably exeeding .9.
^
The ending value of the Acceleration
factor must range from .001 to .9
depending on the starting value. The
ending value must always be larger than
the starting value. If the program is
not accepting the value you are
entering, than you are probably
entering a value which is less than the
starting value.
^
For the limit move you must enter the
maximum number of points that the
commodity can move in one day. Be sure
to enter this value in points not
dollars. For example, if the value of a
limit move is $3, you will enter it as
300 points since no decimals are used in
the High Tech program.
If you are using CSI compatible data you
can refer to Appendix B.
Minimum limit move is one point.
Maximum limit move is 32683 points.
^
The value of the Swing constant must
range from 0 to 99.
^
The length of the Volatility Index can
range from 2 to the number of days you
have in your data file. If you have
more than 299 day in your data file then
the maximum length will be 299.
^
The constant for the Volatility Index
can range from 1 to 9.
^
The percentage of a Retracement can
range from 1 to 99. The most common
retracement values are 25, 50, and 75
percent.
^
You can plot one, two, three, or four
speed lines on the chart at one time.
^
To select the item you would like to
configure, move the highlighted selector
up and down the menu using the up, and
down arrow keys. Once you have selected
the item, press the <return> key. After
making all desired configurations you
must move the highlighted selector to
the last selection on the menu and press
the <return> key to save the
configurations you have made. Once you
have saved the configuration, you can
press the F1 key and return to the
Program Menu.
^
To choose menu foreground and background
colors simply move the highlighted
selector around the menu using the up,
down, right, and left arrow keys. Enter
the desired color by pressing the return
key.
^
The value for this indicator can range
from 0 to 32683. If the program is not
accepting this value, you are probably
enter a negative number.
^
When naming an auto run file you must
enter the disk drive and the path name
as the first part of the file name. For
example, if your auto run file is on
the B drive in the subdirectory titled
RUNFILES, and you would like to name
your file AUTORUN1, you will enter the
following file name:
-->B:\CHARTS\GRAPH1
B: identifies the disk drive.
\RUNFILES identifies the subdirectory.
\AUTORUN1 is the name of the file.
Note: You must have a subdirectory
already created before you enter The
High Tech program. For more information
about subdirectories consult your DOS
manual.
To simply create or read an auto run
file from drive B: enter
-->B:AUTORUN1
If you type
-->AUTORUN1
the run file AUTORUN1 will be either
created or run on/off the default drive.
^
You can display all data in memory to
the screen by pressing the return key.
Or, you can enter the number of days you
would like to have displayed on the
screen. For example, if you would like
to display the last 10 days of data on
the screen, enter a 10.
^
If you would like the program to pause
after plotting each chart you must press
the `Y' key. If you do instruct the
program to pause between charts, you
must press a key after each chart is
completed.
You will typically not have the program
pause between charts if the auto run
file dumps each chart to the printer.
If the autorun file does not dump each
chart to the printer, you should have
the program pause between charts so that
you get a chance to study it.
^
When entering the name of the commodity
you are creating a data file for, enter
the name of the commodity only. Do not
enter the expiration month and year.
You will be entering the expiration
month and year in the next two prompts.
The name of your commodity can not be
more than 15 characters long.
If you have finished creating all
desired data files, press the <return>
key before entering a commodity name and
you will be returned to the Data
Management Menu.
^
Enter the expiration month with a two
digit number. For example, to enter
June as an expiration month you will
enter "06". If you are creating a file
for cash prices or stocks, enter a "0"
for the expiration month.
^
Enter the expiration year with a two
digit number. For example, to enter an
expiration year of 1985, enter "85".
^
Enter the number of weeks which you
expect this data file to eventually
range over. Typically this will be the
number of weeks between the current date
and expiration.
For example, if the current date is June
1st, 1985, and you are creating a data
file for December 85 Live Hogs, the file
will eventually contain data for 24
weeks.
^
Enter the date of the daily set of data
in the following format YYMMDD. For
example, a date of March 2, 1985 will
be entered as 850302.
If you press the <return> key without
entering a date you will be returned to
the Data Management Menu.
^
The day of the week will be represented
by a single digit. The following digits
should be entered in place of the
respective days of the week:
MONDAY 1
TUESDAY 2
WEDNSDAY 3
THURSDAY 4
FRIDAY 5
^
Enter the day's opening price. If there
is no opening price, enter the closing
price or any other price which falls
between the daily high and low prices.
When entering prices, do not use
decimals. A price of 52.45 should be
entered as 5245. If the price is quoted
in quarters then a price of 3.52 and one
quarter will be entered as 3522. A 2
represents one quarter, a 4 represents
one half and a 6 represents three
quarters.
Another example: a per bushell price of
corn quoted at 2.95 and 3/4 will be
entered as 2956.
The highest price you can enter is
65366. If the opening price is higher
than 65366 then drop the last digit.
^
Enter the daily high price. Be sure not
to use decimals. The price must be less
than 65366. If the price is greater
than 65366, drop the last digit.
^
Enter the daily low price. Be sure not
to use decimals. The price must be less
than 65366. If the price is greater
than 65366, drop the last digit.
^
Enter the daily closing price. Be sure
not to use decimals. The price must be
less than 65366. If the price is
greater than 65366, drop the last digit.
^
Enter the actual volume for the previous
day. Since the actual volume is not
reported until the following day, you
must enter yesterday's true volume and
the program will enter this volume with
yesterday's prices. The volume which
will accompany today's prices will be
the estimated volume.
^
Enter today's estimated volume. This
value will be replaced by the actual
volume tomorrow.
^
Enter yesterday's open interest. The
program will place this open interest
with yesterday's prices. Today's open
interest will not be reported until
tomorrow, therefore, the program will
also use yesterday's open interest as
today's open interest. When you enter
the new open interest tommorrow, this
value will be replaced by the true open
interest.
^
You must enter the date in the following
format YYMMDD. For example, to enter
the date of July 1, 1985 you will type
850701. If you press the <return> key
without entering a date, you will be
returned to the Data Management Menu.
^
To select the piece of data to be edited
you must enter the corresponding number.
For example, to edit the date press the
"1" key and enter the correct date. To
edit the opening price, press the "3"
key and enter the correct opening price.
When you have finished editing all
incorrect data press the <return> key
and you will be returned to the Data
Management Menu.
^
To change a value, enter the new value
and press the <return> key.
^
Use the up and down arrow keys to
highlight the desired selection and
press the <return> key.
^
Use the up and down arrow keys to
highlight the desired function and then
press the <return> key to execute.
Press the F1 key if you would like to
move to the Program Menu and run the
Charting program.
^
You have chosen a file to be deleted.
If you are sure you would like to delete
this file, press the `Y' key. If you do
not wish to delete this contract, press
the `N' key.
Note: Once you delete a contract there
is no way to reclaim it.
Be Carefull !!!!!!
^
To select the desired color, simply move
the highlighted selector around the menu
using the up, down, left, and right
arrow keys on the numeric key pad.
Press the <return> key to enter the
selected color. Press the F6 key if you
would like to return to the
CONFIGURATION MENU without changing the
color.
^
If prices are quoted in 32nds then enter
"32", otherwise enter "100". Common
commodities which trade in thirty
seconds are:
T. BONDS
GNMA's
CD's
TEN YEAR NOTES
^
This message is to make you aware of the
fact that all commodities quoted in
32ands (such as T. BONDS) must be
adjusted to compensate for the gaps.
For example, a gap will occur when
prices rise one point from 6931, the
price will jump to 7000 even though the
increase was only one point. These gaps
must be removed or the bar chart will
appear jagged. Gaps will also cause
false signals to be given by almost all
technical indicators. The disadvantage
to eliminating the gaps is that prices
will no longer match the quoted prices
for each day. To compensate for this
problem, we have compromised a bit. The
prices displayed in the upper left
corner of the screen are the unaltered
prices. The unaltered prices appear
only for the last day. If you use the
cursor keys to report statistics, you
will see the altered prices printed in
the upper left corner of the screen.
NOTE: Due to the alteration of prices,
the scaling on the Bar Chart will not
match today's quoted price.
^
If you would like the portion of the
chart which is to be occupied by the
chart you are now constructing, press
the <return> key. For example, if you
would like your new chart to occupy the
upper left corner of the chart, and that
portion is currently occupied by another
chart, press the <return> key to have
the old chart erased.
If you would like to draw the new chart
over the old, press the `N' key. You
will typically press the `N' key when
plotting a moving average over a bar
chart.
^
You have the choice of using two
different sets of colors. You can
either use Green, Brown, and Red, or
White, Cyan, and Magenta. Use the
cursor keys to select the desired
palette of colors.
^
